DFW Youth Climate Conference and Entrepreneurship Competition
The DFW Youth Climate Conference will provide high school and college students a unique opportunity to learn about climate change and its specific implications for the DFW region.
The aim is to stimulate conversations about climate change (drivers and impacts, mitigation, adaptation), empower students to act, expose them to career and networking opportunities.
The event will take place in person and is open to high school and college students.
The morning will consist of five panels on Climate Drivers and Impacts, Climate Mitigation, Climate Adaptation, Climate Careers and Climate Research.
The afternoon will feature an Entrpreneurship Competition, where 12 teams (following initial screening) will compete to win seed funding for their climate action project.
A Call to Action:
Climate change is caused by greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, deforestation, agriculture, industrialization.
It is a threat multiplier and worsens the health of all species and deepens economic inequity.
Extreme weather is frequent, long lasting, and severe
2024 was the warmest year on record and the 1st year at 1.5C above pre-industrial levels (threshold to prevent catastrophic impacts like widespread coral reef loss, sea-level rise, forest fires, melting of ice)
DFW is the 3rd U.S. city with growing urban heat islands and disadvantaged areas are +12ºF hotter than other areas.
Resource depletion (e.g. water) and degradation (e.g. air, soil) harms ecosystems and human health.
It is important to meet our needs today without limiting the ability of future generations to meet theirs.
